PAHO Foundation (the Foundation) is an independent nonprofit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to helping people across the Americas live longer, healthier, and more productive lives. 

As a philanthropic organization, we aim to have a profound, positive impact on public health challenges that threaten the health and wellbeing of people in Latin America, the Caribbean, the United States, and Canada. Our decisions are guided by our core principles: Commitment, Courage, Resourcefulness, Collaboration, Agility, and Accountability.

What is most important about PAHO Foundation’s mission in today’s world?

Solving today’s complex and often unpredictable public health challenges requires knowledge from diverse disciplines and perspectives, collaboration, and innovative approaches. The Foundation has the flexibility to convene a broad range of thought leaders and the most insightful minds in industry, academia, philanthropy, and government, and engage the right partners with the expertise, ingenuity, and resources to help improve the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age. We help build cross-disciplinary coalitions to create institutional change and build healthier, more secure futures for families, communities, and regions.

What are the Foundation’s focus areas? 

Over the past 10 years, the Foundation has invested in public health initiatives that address the burden of disease, including tropical diseases like malaria, dengue, and Chagas disease; communicable diseases, such as HIV/AIDS; and vaccine-preventable diseases. Current focus areas for the Foundation include, communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases, environmental impacts, health systems strengthening, and women's health.

What kind of impact does PAHO Foundation have in public health?

The Foundation has a long history of innovating health solutions, since its inception in 1968. For example, through the medical text book program known as PALTEX and regional and international partnerships, the Foundation has helped improve health care training/development and strengthen health systems across the region. Today, the Foundation continues to bring a broad range of partners together to address communicable and non-communicable diseases and help countries build strong health systems. Initiatives to address women’s cancers, confront the threat of antimicrobial resistance, and reduce the incidence of neglected tropical diseases are current priorities.

The Foundation is an independent, US registered not-for-profit organization that supports partners like the Pan American Health Organization. PAHO Foundation mobilizes resources, brings together like-minded mission oriented partners and speeds delivery of services that improve public health in the Americas.

The Foundation strives to create lasting partnerships for systemic change across the Americas, from Canada to the southernmost point of South America, focusing most of its efforts in Latin America and the Caribbean. By convening strategic partners and mobilizing technical, financial, and intellectual resources, the Foundation helps countries in the Americas advance towards the goal of universal health coverage and better health for all.
