What are the Foundation’s focus areas?
Over the past 10 years, PAHO Foundation has invested in public health initiatives that address the burden of disease, including tropical diseases like malaria, dengue and Chagas disease, communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS and vaccine-preventable diseases. More recently the growing epidemic of non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension and cancer has become an important priority for PAHO Foundation.
What kind of impact does PAHO Foundation have in public health?
PAHO Foundation has a record of innovating for health since 1967. For example, through the medical text book program known as PLATEX and the partnership with the Pan American Health Organization, the Foundation has helped to improve the training and professional development of thousands of health professionals across the region. Today PAHO Foundation continues to bring a broad range of partners together to address communicable and non-communicable diseases and help countries build strong health systems. Initiatives to address women’s cancers, confront the threat of anti-microbial resistance, and reduce the incidence of dengue, influenza and meningococcal disease are current priorities.

Why did the Foundation change its name?
Since its founding in 1967 as Pan American Health and Education Foundation, or PAHEF, the Foundation has evolved from its primary focus on supporting medical education to broader health philanthropy and supporter of the Pan American Health Organization's mission. The Foundation changed its name to PAHO Foundation in 2014 and continues to operate as an independent, 501(c)3 organization with its own Board of Trustees. Today, the Foundation is about accelerating public health innovation in the Americas.
